JR Tower (JR Tower Observatory T38)
JR Tower is a high-rise connected to JR Sapporo Station in which there are department stores, a hotel, and offices. The Tower Observatory Deck on the 38th floor, 160 meters above sea level, which is the highest building in Hokkaido, commands a 360-degree panoramic view of Sapporo City.

Old Hokkaido Government Building
The symbol of the pioneering era of Hokkaido, this beautiful red brick building in American neo-baroque style has an elaborate entrance hall decorated in a typical Meiji-era western architecture style. The Hokkaido Public Archives and the Memorial Room are also in the building.

The Botanic Garden, Hokkaido University
Forests of alder, elm, birch, cherry, coniferous trees, a rose garden, lilac bushes and an alpine plant garden are all to be viewed within this vast facility which boasts a total area of 13.3 ha. A virgin forest from the days before the Development Commission entered the city is also preserved on the premises and a museum dedicated to the native Ainu, and the Hokkaido University Museum's display of animal archaeological materials are also available to visit.

Tokei-dai (Clock Tower) - an important cultural property
The main symbol of Sapporo, this tower is a reminder of the pioneering days of the city. It was first built in 1878 as a military drill hall of the Sapporo Agricultural College, predecessor to Hokkaido University. Reference material on Sapporo and former uses of the hall is displayed inside.

Odori Park
Stretching east-west through the center of the city, the spacious park overflows with flowers, trees and water fountains. It was originally created to serve as a fire break in 1871 and also served as the yardstick for Sapporo's gridiron street design. There is a rose garden, a pond with a fountain and an outdoor stage. At the easternmost end is the Sapporo TV tower and at the western end, the Sapporo Reference Hall.

Sapporo TV Tower
The 147.2m high tower was built in 1957 and is the main landmark in the city although it is no longer used for broadcasting and is only used as an observation tower. The observation floor is 90m above ground level from where a view of the entire city and beyond can be enjoyed.

Sapporo Factory
A multi-purpose complex built on the site of the Sapporo Beer Factory, the birthplace of the Japanese beer industry and the famous Sapporo brand of beer. There are seven buildings, including a shopping mall, restaurants, a hotel and an amusement park.

Sapporo Beer Garden
This beer garden is the most popular place locally for the Mongolian lamb barbecue dish that is known in Japan as "Genghis Khan." Draught beer comes directly from the factory, and the fresh lamb barbecue is a delight.

Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill
Opened as a tourist site in 1959 on the premises of the Agricultural Ministry's Hokkaido Agricultural Laboratories, the terrace is located in the middle of a vast field where sheep graze peacefully. The new baseball-cum-soccer stadium, Sapporo Dome, can be viewed beyond Dr. Clark's statue that points to the Ishikari Plain far in the distance. It's a delightfully pastoral scene.

Sapporo Dome
Sapporo Dome is an all-weather, multi-purpose roofed sports field used not only for baseball but also for soccer games. The prominent observatory atop the roof offers a full panoramic view of the city of Sapporo.

Historical Village of Hokkaido
This is an outdoor museum in which approximately sixty buildings, collected from all over Hokkaido and dating back to the Meiji and Taisho periods, are exhibited, along with items used in their contemporary daily life. Trolleys drawn by horses are in operation during the summer; horse-drawn sleighs are used in winter. Both types of vehicles are fun to ride and, also, interesting as exhibits in motion.

Hokkaido University
Founded as Sapporo Agricultural College in 1876, Hokkaido University serves as a tourist spot with many landmarks, including the University Museum, original goods shops, the bust of Dr. William S. Clark, and the Model Barn designated as a nationally important cultural property. Poplar and Ginkgo avenues in the beautiful campus are also must-viewing.

Nijo ichiba Market
About sixty shops selling seafood, fresh produce and prepared foods line a full block of South Nijo Street. The market has served local residents since the Meiji era and now is securely established as a tourist site.

Susukino
Susukino is well known in Japan as Sapporo's entertainment center that never sleeps. 5,000 to 6,000 restaurants and pleasure establishments press against each other in the district. It's only a leisurely 30 minute walk along the tourist friendly main avenue from Sapporo's main station.

Nakajima Park
Located south of the city's major entertainment area, Susukino, Nakajima Park was created in 1887 and has served as the site for expositions and events since the days of old. Facilities such as the Toyohira Hall, Hasso-an, the public literature museum, a concert hall, sports center and an observatory are all found within the park.

Maruyama Park
Maruyama Park is an area of pure nature at the north-west foot of the 226m Mt. Maruyama. The Hokkaido Shrine, noted for its beautiful cherry blossoms in season and the Maruyama Municipal Zoo are also found nearby. There is a promenade running through the primeval forest which has been designated as a natural national treasure.

Sapporo Maruyama Zoo
This zoo covers an area of 224,780 square meters, and contains some 700 animals and birds representing 170 different species.
You can observe animals popular among children, such as lions, giraffes, hippos etc., at "Tropical Animal House," a variety of animals in Asia, such as snow leopards and lesser pandas at "Asia Zone," and in "Reptile and Amphibian House" you can learn the living-style of many rare kinds of these creatures.

Hokkaido Shrine
This Hokkaido Jingu enshrines three deities for the reclamation of Hokkaido. The reclamation of Hokkaido was begun when the Meiji Restoration succeeded. Emperor Meiji selected protecting deities of the reclamation of Hokkaido and enshrined them in this shrine in 1869. 1200 cherry blossoms can be found in the precincts of the shrine and are at their best when they bloom each May.

Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium (Okurayama Observatory)
Constructed in 1931, the stadium featured in the 1972 Winter Olympics was then home to the 90m ski jump competition and is still used for ski jump competitions throughout the year. After taking a chair lift to the top of the mountain visitors will see a spectacular view of Sapporo weather permitting.
In addition, and in the warmer environs of the indoors, the stadium also houses the Sapporo Winter Sports Museum with its Winter Olympic Games exhibitions. For further details on the museum please contact the main office.

Mt. Moiwa Observatory
Mt. Moiwa is the geographical center of Sapporo. Moiwa is the native Ainu word for "a place for viewing". The view of the city, the scenery of Ishikari Bay and Mt. Daisetsuzan as are seen from the 531m high mountain are spectacular sights indeed. In the summertime, cable cars are operated during the night so tourists can enjoy the beautiful nighttime view.
The observation deck has been closed for renovation work since April 2010. The new observation deck will open in December 23, 2011.

Jozankei Hot Springs
Boasting a 140 year history, this spa town is about an hour's drive from the center of Sapporo. It was opened in 1866, and has large-scale inns, hotels and resort facilities. Many of the area's hotels and inns have the spas for one day visitors.
