Murayama Sengen-jinja Shrine
This shrine has been the center of Shugendo on Fujisan from the beginning of the 14th century. With many popular lodgings in a row, it was once on a climbing trail to Fuji, but declined after a new route opened. Sengen-jinja Shrine and Dainichi-do Temple coexist within the precincts, which is a syncretization of Shinto and Buddhism. The Japanese cedar and gingko trees are designated natural monuments by the prefecture. In July every year, the Fujisan Opening Ceremony announces the start of Fujisan climbing season, where many men wearing fundoshi (traditional Japanese loincloth) participate, while the place is filled with spectators.
