Things to see

Suyama Sengen-jinja Shrine

Suyama Sengen-jinja Shrine
Suyama Sengen-jinja Shrine
A shrine at the starting point of Suyamaguchi Trail. In the written documents of the shrine, it was allegedly founded by Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, the most skillful and famed warrior-prince of Japanese legendary history. The shrine was already in existence in 1524. Following the eruption of 1707, the shrine pavilion and trail suffered great damage, and the current shrine pavilion is a wooden structure rebuilt in 1823. The red torii gateway standing along the river is very impressive, not to mention the sacred trees well over 500 years old standing on both sides. In 1997, the ascending route along Suyamaguchi Trail was reconstructed, while the descending route also opened in 1999.
