Kawaguchi Asama-jinja Shrine
Asama-jinja Shrine, traditionally said to be the first shrine to be constructed on the northern side of Fujisan. With the Misaka mountain district at the back, it is situated across from Fujisan looking over Lake Kawaguchiko. In 864, Fujisan experienced a major historic eruption. The lava flow swallowed the town on the northern side of Fujisan, dividing Lake Senoumi into two. This lava flow caused great damage to the town as well. In the following year, Asama no Okami was enshrined and the “Chinkasai” (fire calming festival) came to be held. The shrine prospered as a hub of shrine visits and accommodation from late medieval times, when climbing Mt. Fuji became popular, to the Edo era. In the eruption of 864, Lake Senoumi was divided into Lake Saiko and Lake Shojiko. How vast could the lava flow have been? That suggests how great the damage must have been at the time.
